When considering a power asset and technology to choose, be mindful that ongoing replacements of inferior tech will incur performance losses throughout the useful lifespan, which significantly affect your profitability.

Downtime, lost production, or costly replacements will balloon your initial system cost while remaining capped at its mediocre production return of kWh’s.

Incorrect design, planning or installation of the equipment according to very strict standards of conformity, will render the warranty void for the individual components.

The cost and risk associated with a poor installation greatly outweigh the cost of hiring a professional who will certify the installation.

What could cause Warranty to become invalid?

If the solar system is not correctly planned and sized and installed for your application, it will underperform on its kWh potential it could have achieved, based on the technology invested.

Another way to look at it is the percentage utilization of the asset. If you are achieving only 50% – 70% utilization, then you purchased equipment which spends most of the day being throttled in production to just meet demand, and could have generated far greater savings for you over the long term.

A solar panel with a PID (Potential Induced Degradation) rate of 0.8% – 1% per year, will be 8% – 10% less efficient after 10 years. Adding to the throttled losses, these and other cumulative losses need to be considered when designing your most profitable solar system based on your consumption needs and projecting your Return on Investment.


Rather than thinking of getting backup power to allow you to remain on the expensive, failing grid, we should consider the grid our backup until we can shift onto a better source of energy.

The national grid is expected to lose further capacity over the coming years, with load shedding expected for at least 5-8 more years while maintenance is conducted. Prices are expected to double every 4 years going forward.

Your solar power system should be viewed as a financial product that generates annual returns like any other investment. Investing in your Solar PV system can provide the fastest returns on your investment, outperforming property, stocks or even SA Bonds.

It will be considerably more expensive to remain on the grid over the next 20+ years.

The real question here is do you want “diminishing returns” or “fixed returns” on your investment.

Lithium allows you to start with initially more capacity at the same price as Super Capacitors, but you often need double the lithium battery capacity to match the capabilities of a Super Capacitor-based storage system, and then degrades to the same size until needing replacing, whereby it becomes more expensive than Capacitor based storage.

Lithium Batteries offer 5,000 – 6,000 recharges (10 years), but they are degrading from day 1, down to 50% capacity over their cycle life, affecting overall performance and your profitability. To improve the overall performance of your system, these batteries typically need replacing in 10 – 12 years once they are degraded and weaken your systems charging capabilities.

Super Capacitor batteries are the paradigm change in storage technology with 1,000,000 recharges (200 times more than Lithium batteries) and double the charging speed.

Super Capacitors also boast no degradation over their useful lifespan, so the 7.1kWh usable Capacitor energy you purchase upfront will still be available in decades to come and expanded on without any losses, due to older modules causing voltage drops.

The projected lifespan of Super Capacitor based technology is 45 years. This allows for maximum performance and profitability from your Energy Asset without frequent battery replacements needed for all other chemical battery alternatives, but they require experts to calibrate them correctly at installation.
